HomeMy WebLinkAboutA005 - Letter dated February 7, 1989 from Rae Haws f 812 Douglas Avenue Ames, Iowa 50010 February 7, 1989 To: Historic Commission Members Planning and Zoning Commission Members City Council Members Re: Establishment of Historic District in Old Town I am writing to urge your support of the creation of an historic preservation district in the Old Town area of Ames. As an owner of a home, built in 1893 in the proposed district, I feel the city should do as much as possible to preserve this house and the other remaining older homes for the future citizens of Ames. Some of the original houses have already been destroyed, and, unfortunately, often replaced with buildings whose designs have little in common with the existing architectural styles. A preservation district would keep this from happening in the future. It would not prevent new development in the area, only make it compatible with what is already there. These are exciting times in the Old Town neighborhood. Much work is being done to restore old houses. There seems to be city-wide interest in these restoration projects, as shown by the over 500 people who went on the historic home tour last October. I believe that a historic district would protect what is currently being done and encourage more to be done. And ultimately, I believe this will lead to a neighborhood in which all of Ames can take pride and enjoy.
