HomeMy WebLinkAboutA003 - Letter dated February 6, 1989 from Sharon Wirth Feb . 6 , 1989 Historic Preservation Commission Members 125 S. 3rd Street Ames , IA 50010 Dear Commission Members : I am writing to express my support for the establishment of the Old Town Historic District . Creating this district is a decision to encourage the preservation of a neighborhood which embodies and represents the historical and architectural heritage of Ames . Historic preservation has a long and successful track record , in Iowa and across the country , which includes preservation , development and neighborhood stabilization . There is every reason to believe that the same would occur in Ames . Indeed , visitors and residents remark on the numerous positive results already visible in this area . I believe the most positive chanqes seen recently are the direct result of interest in and a committment to historic preservation . These changes and upgrading of properties are positive for Old Town and reflect positively on all of Ames . Establishment of the district is essential to encourage continued investment in rehabilitation . Many of us have committed our time and financial resources to insure that these cultural /historical resources remain for generations to come . Ames ' historic structures are limited in number , the proposed district contains a unique collection of them. The City of Ames would be prudent to build upon its unique features which make it a pleasant place to live , visit , and work . I feel the proposed Old Town Historic District is one of those features . It will not , however , remain a pleasant place to be if short-sighted individuals continue to mutilate porches and other crucial architectural features or if investors only collect the rent and do not re- invest in needed repairs and improvements . These things are currently happening . A new and different planning process is needed for this area . Establishment of a historic district would serve to make people aware of the unique architecture here , increase neighborhood pride (usually leading to in- creased maintanence ) , and establish a process for planned growth and development which builds upon the area ' s existing strengths . I urge you to support the request for establishment of the Old Town Historic District . Sincerely , Sharon Wirth 803 Burnett Ave . RECEIVED F . f " $ n 7 CITY OF AMES. IOWA t. DEPT. OFKAMM& HOUSIIVG
