Ladies & Gentlemen:
I am writing in regard to the proposed Historic District in the Old Town
area currently being considered by city officials. I am very excited about
the prospect of a Historic District in our community. Such a district will
help insure the survival of many architecturally significant structures in the
Old Town area. These Victorian and post-Victorian dwellings are among the few
links Ames residents still have with their heritage. Four generations of my
family have lived in the Old Town area since the turn of the century. I am
currently residing in this area and am involved in a historic restoration of
my 1890's Vintage home. In the future I will encourage and hope to be
involved in other restoration efforts in "Old Town". Many other residents in
the area are pursuing similar goals and share my sentiments on haphazard
development and construction in this area. Too many historic homes have
already been destroyed or remodeled beyond recognition. Further demolition of
dwellings and subsequent replacement by dwellings of inappropriate
architectural style can only hurt the community.
Similarly, poorly planned improvements and repairs detract from the
historic cohesiveness of Old Town. All citizens of Ames must share the
responsibility of protecting these historic structures. Construction and
development in the Old Town area needs to be carefully planned and monitored
to insure the survival of this important community asset.
I hope you people will take these things into consideration when making
decisions that affect the future of Ames. You can make a significant impact
on the historic character of our community.
Sincerely,
1
C
