HomeMy WebLinkAboutA003 - Council Action Form dated June 13, 1989 ITEM #: DATE: 06/13/89 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: First Reading on an Ordinance to Amend the Sign Ordinance of the City of Ames. BACKGROUND: The developers of the Northridge Parkway Subdivision have requested the approval to install a "development sign" for this residential subdivision. The size of the requested sign is 180 square feet. Currently, the sign regulations of the City limit the size of signs in residential areas to 32 square feet. The City Council, at their meeting of May 23, 1989, directed the staff to prepare an amendment to the Sign Ordinance that would more closely match the requirements for development signs. The City staff have contacted numerous comparable communities to gather information on how "development signs" are regulated in various cities. In addition, the staff have contacted the Planning Advisory Service to obtain their advice on regulating "development signs". A copy of the information obtained from the comparable communities and the Department's general recommendations with respect to the "development sign" Ordinance provisions is attached to this Action Form. A summary of the important parts of this proposed amendment are listed as follows. Current Regulation Proposed Regulation Square Footage 32 square feet 96 square feet Sign Height No requirement 12 feet Duration No requirement When 50% of lots have obtained permits The rationale underlying these proposed regulations are taken primarily from the examples found in other communities. In addition, the staff feels that the increase in the size of the development sign is appropriate since the development sign must be located on a lot that abuts a collector or arterial street and must be separated from any residence by a minimum of 100 feet. A copy of the proposed Ordinance is attached to this Action Form. 2 ALTERNATIVES: 1. The City Council can approve the first reading of the proposed amendment to the Sign Ordinance for the City of Ames. 2. The City Council can deny approval of the first reading of the proposed amendment to the Sign Ordinance for the City of Ames. 3. The City Council can refer this matter back to City staff for further review and clarification. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative #1. This will approve of the first reading of the proposed amendment to the Sign Ordinance of the City of Ames.
