HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form dated January 20, 1987 COUNCIL ACTION FORM
Item # /7/
Date: January ,
SUBJECT: Parking Ordinance - South Walnut Avenue
BACKGROUND:
The staff has received a letter from the Willson Elder Service Center, 205
South Walnut Avenue. The letter expresses concern for traffic safety ad-
jacent to the Willson Elder Service Center. A copy of the letter is at-
tached.
The staff has reviewed both the center's site plan and the traffic charac-
teristics in the area. The removal of parking from South Walnut Avenue
adjacent to the center would increase the available sight distance at the
center's driveways. Parking is already prohibited on the east side of
South Walnut Avenue. An ordinance prohibiting parking on the west side of
South Walnut Avenue adjacent to the Center would be advisable. A map of
the proposed parking prohibition is attached.
ALTERNATIVES:
1 . Direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance prohibiting parking
along the west side of South Walnut Avenue from a point 82 feet north
of South Second Street's centerline to a point 314 feet south of the
said centerline.
2. Reject the request.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council adopt alterna-
tive number 1 above, thereby directing the City Attorney to prepare an
ordinance prohibiting parking along the west side of South Walnut Avenue
from a point 82 feet north of South Second Street's centerline to a point
341 feet south of the said centerline.

Dear Mr. Valenta,
We are h--wing a safety problem here at Willson Elder Service
Center. The traffic on Walnut moves very fast and visibility
from the drive exit is blocked by vehicles parked on either
side of the exit. In the last week there have been three close
calls because of the small size of cars and the blocked vision
due to cars parked close to the exit. It is even w3rse when
trucks or travel trailers are in these spots. The drivers of the
busses even have trouble seeing oncoming vehicles.
I am not sure what the answer is but I am very concerne3 that there
may be a serious accident at this location. Any help you can
give to alleviate this situation will certainly be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Anne Charles, Coordinator
Willson Elder Service Center
