AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE
OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA, BY REPEALING
SUB-SECTION 26.72 AND ENACTING A NEW SUB-
SECTION 26.72 WHICH PROHIBITS PERSONS FROM
DRIVING MOTOR VEHICLES WHILE PERSONS ARE
RIDING ON A PART OF THE VEHICLE NOT
INTENDED FOR PASSENGER USE; BY REPEALING
SUB-SECTION 26.60 AND ENACTING A NEW SUB-
SECTION 26.60 WHICH REQUIRES DRIVERS TO
YIELD TO APPROACHING EMERGENCY VEHICLES;
REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES OR PARTS OF
ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH; AND
ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE
BE IT ENACTED, by the City Council for the City of Ames, Iowa:
Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa, shall be
and is hereby amended by repealing sub-section 26.72 and enacting a
new sub-section 26.72 as follows:
Sec. 26.72. RIDING ON PART OF VEHICLE NOT INTENDED
FOR PASSENGERS
(1) No person shall ride on any vehicle, upon any portion thereof
not designated or intended for the use of passengers.
(2) No person shall drive or move a motor vehicle when any other
person is riding upon any portion of a motor vehicle not
designated or intended for the use of passengers.
(3) This provision shall not apply to an employee engaged in the
necessary discharge of a duty, or to persons riding within
truck bodies in space intended for merchandise.
Section Two. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa, shall be
and is hereby amended by repealing sub-section 26.60 and enacting a
new sub-section 26.60 as follows:
26.60. DUTIES ON APPROACH OF EMERGENCY
VEHICLES
"Upon the immediate approach of an authorized
emergency vehicle with any lamp or device display-
ing a red light, or an authorized emergency vehicle
of a fire department displaying a blue light, or
when the driver is giving audible signal by siren,
exhaust whistle, or bell, the driver of every other
vehicle shall yield the right of way and shall immedi-
ately drive to a position parallel to, and as close as
possible to, the right hand edge or curb of the
highway clear of any intersection and shall stop and
remain in such position until the authorized emer-
gency vehicle has passed, except when otherwise
directed by a police officer. For the purposes of
this section, "red light" or "blue light" means a
light or lighting device that, when illuminated, will
exhibit a solid flashing or strobing red or blue
light."
Section Three. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith
are repealed to the extent of such conflict if any.
Section Four. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and
after its passage and publication as required by law.
