HomeMy WebLinkAboutA002 - Council Action Form dated March 4, 1986 COUNCIL ACTION FORM Item # Date: Warch 4th, SUBJECT: Parking Regulations on Kellogg Avenue BACKGROUND: Recently the Public Works Department began a process of assuring that park- ing signs match the requirements of parking regulations contained in Sec- tion 18 of the Ames Code. The area bounded by Sixth Street, Duff Avenue, Thirteenth Street, and Grand Avenue was discovered to be signed with inac- curate parking signs. These signs were replaced with correct signs, how- ever, a hardship resulted in at least one instance. The First Church of Christ Scientist, at 9th Street and Kellogg Avenue had become accustomed to parking along both sides of the 800 block of Kellogg Avenue in compliance with the posted parking signs. Unfortunately the parking regulation affecting this block prohibits parking on the east side of Kellogg Avenue on Sundays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The newly installed parking signs reflect this regulation. The church board has petitioned the City to allow parking on both sides of the 800 block of Kellogg Avenue on Sundays. The staff has reviewed this situation and does not object to the change in light of the fact that park- ing has historically been permitted on Sundays without compromising street safety. The letter requesting relief is attached for review. Also, at- tached is a proposed ordinance that would implement the requested change. ALTERNATIVES: 1 . Approve the ordinance on first reading. 2. Deny the ordinance. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council adopt alterna- tive number 1 above, thereby approving the ordinance on first reading.
