COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: Resolution Approving the Proposed Street Name Changes for Oakwood
First Addition
BACKGROUND:
Polk County Federal Savings and Loan Association of Des Moines , Iowa is
requesting that the City consider changing the names of streets located in
Oakwood First Addition to the City of Ames . Polk County Federal Savings and
Loan Association is in the process of foreclosing on the area known as
"Oakwood First Addition" . The City Council is empowered to change the names
of streets located in subdivisions after first having received a
recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission.
In 1977, the Ames City Council approved the Final Plat of the Oakwood First
Addition, which is a subdivision comprised of 54 lots and located north of
Oakwood Road and approximately one mile east of Elwood Drive . Since the
completion of the subdivision by the developer, only one house has been
constructed , with a second house under construction, in the subdivision. The
remaining lots are still vacant .
Because of financial problems, the original developer no longer owns the land,
and Polk County Federal Savings and Loan Association is thus obtaining
ownership . The Savings and Loan Association feels that it is appropriate at
this time to change the names of the streets within Oakwood First Addition due
to this transfer of ownership. Polk County Federal Savings and Loan proposed
that the street names be changed as follows :
I. Cochrane Boulevard to Green Hills Drive;
2. Cochrane Circle to Oakwood Circle or Glen Oak Circle;
3. Marjo Drive to Fair Oaks Drive;
4. Marjo Circle to Fair Oaks Circle;
5. Michelle Drive to Oak Crest Drive or Ashwood Drive.
Representatives from Polk County Federal and the Green Hills development met
to discuss the naming of Cochrane Boulevard, and both parties felt that the
renaming of this street to Green Hills Drive was appropriate in that it serves
as a collector through the Oakwood First Addition and the Green Hills
Addition.
The Department of Planning and Housing reviewed the proposed names for Oakwood
First Addition and suggested that the following names be assigned.
I. Cochrane Boulevard to Green Hills Drive;
2. Cochrane Circle to Burr Oak Circle;
3. Marjo Drive to White Oak Drive;
4. Marjo Circle to White Oak Circle;
5. Michelle Drive to Red Oak Drive.

The Department feels that by using the names of different types of Oak trees,
that these names are more faithful to the concept of the word If as
indicated in the name of the subdivision. It is also hoped that there may be
a planting theme that may be created by the owners of the property given these
name assignments.
The proposed street names from the Department of Planning and Housing have
been discussed with the officials from Polk County Federal Savings and Loan
Association, and they have indicated that they have no problems with the names
as assigned by the Department. The Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed
this request at their meeting of June 19, 1985, and the Planning and Zoning
Commission has recommended that the Council approve of the name changes as
proposed by the Department of Planning and Housing.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. The City Council can adopt the name changes as recommended by the
Planning and Zoning Commission.
2. The City Council can adopt the name changes as proposed by the official
from Polk County Federal Savings and Loan Association.
3. The City Council can propose name changes as they feel are appropriate to
the area.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative
1. This will change the names of the streets within Oakwood First Addition to
the names as proposed by the Planning and Zoning Commission at their meeting
of June 19, 1985.
