HomeMy WebLinkAboutA002 - Memo with responses from local retail outlet regarding dish antenna height TO: Mayor and Members of City Council 0
FROM : Department of Planning and Housing
DATE : November 30, 1983
SUBJECT : Dish Antenna Ordinance
The Department has sent copies of the proposed dish antenna ordinance to two
local retail dish antenna outlets and to Heritage Cablevision for their comments .
They have provided the following comments :
Response by phone from Roy Pockrandt, Midstates Distributing
They sell satellite dish antennas . He said that the 10-foot height in
a residential area is too low. They do sell antennas 12 feet in
diameter and they would be mounted on a base that may be as high as
four feet. A 16-foot maximum height would appear to be more
reasonable. He stated he has no other difficulties with the setback
requirements .
Response by phone from Sterling Clink, Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts
He sells satellite dish antennas . He felt the maximum 10-foot height
was too low and said he would like to submit a written response in a
day or two.
Response by phone from Ed Powers , Engineer, WOI
He explained that the two satellite dishes that WOI has are 5 meters
and 7 meters in diameter. These dishes are approximately 20 and 24
feet in height. He went on to say that in the Ames area, all
satellite antennas are tilted approximately 400 and face an arc of the
sky between 1500 true SSE and 2250 true WSW. The location of the
antenna must be shielded from microwaves and must be located so that
they are not blocked by any structure in order to receive transmission
from the satellite. There is a possibility that persons located on
the north side of the street may have difficulty locating a satellite
antenna in the rear yard if the rear yard is small and the residence
is two stories in height .
He explained further that all satellite antennas must be mounted in
the ground for stability because of their weight and size. In the r
future, as they get smaller, it may be possible to mount them on the
roof because they will be lighter and there would be sufficient
stability on the roof.
Recommendation
The Department of Planning and Housing recommends that the City Council consider
modifying the proposed ordinance to allow a maximum of 16 feet for dish antennas
in residential zones .
