HomeMy WebLinkAboutA007 - Council Action Form dated October 25, 1983 ITEM # 1-7 DATE: October 25, 1983 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: Parking Regulations Along Prairie View East BACKGROUND After the filing of two petitions regarding parking regulation changes on Prairie View East and subsequent Council action on this issue, the Ames City Council, at its May 3, 1983, meeting, directed the residents of Prairie View East to meet and try to resolve differences regarding the parking issues on this thoroughfare. At the October 11, 1983, City Council meeting, Councilperson John Parks requested that staff place this item on the Agenda for October 25th. He had received num- erous inquiries regarding the parking regulations on this street and felt that further Council action was required to finally settle this issue. Attached to this document you will find the previous Council Action Forms describ- ing the parking situation along Prairie'View East. The staff concern, however, still lies with the inability of emergency vehicles to negotiate the three curves along Prairie View East. It is still the staff's recommendation that the inside curve of the three curves along the southern portion of Prairie View East be designated as "no parking" zones. It is the feeling of staff that this alterna- tive would allow additional street area for emergency vehicle access and should eliminate the pressing staff concerns regarding emergency vehicle movement. It should, therefore, be stated that the staff's recommendation has not changed. ALTERNATIVES 1. Revoke the existing alternate side parking regulation along Prairie View East. 2. Leave the existing parking regulations along Prairie View East unchanged. 3. Direct the City Manager to establish "no parking" zones along the inside curb of these three curves on the south portion of Prairie View East. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION It is the recommendation of the City Manager to City Council that they adopt alternative number 3, therefore directing staff to establish "no parking" zones along the inside curb of the three curves at the southern portion of Prairie View East. This can easily be done by applying yellow traffic paint to the curb and by the establishment of "no parking" signs at strategic locations. This alterna- tive would allow additional street area for emergency vehicle access and should eliminate the most pressing staff concerns regarding emergency vehicle movement. in addition, it is recommended that the existing alternate side parking regula- tions along Prairie View East be revoked.
