PARKING RESTRICTIONS ON PRAIRIE VIEW EAST: Mike Conlon, 2103 Prairie
View East, appeared and presented Council with a petition signed by
residents of the street requesting alternate side parking. The re-
sidents were. concerned with providing sufficient access for emergency
vehicles. Mr. Conlon had taken measurements of space between vehicles
that were parked on both sides of the street which is currently the
regulation. The distances measured 9'3" , 9'5" and 13 '3" . An average
sized ambulance and fire truck is 9' 1" wide.
Staff had reviewed the situation and recommended that the inside of
the curves in the streets, which is where it is most difficult for
emergency vehicles to pass through, be designated as no parking
zones. Conlon stated that the residents would prefer alternate
side parking to the no parking zones on the curbs. Council Member
Atherly pointed out that alternate side parking can be inconvenient
since vehicles must be moved from one side of the street to the other
at a specific time period. She wanted to be sure that the residents
were aware of what would be required. Council Member Curtis suggested
that parking be allowed on one side of the street or the other.
Phil Coy requested the alternate side parking since there are many
vacant lots on the street and he felt that it would not be desirable
to have parking on one side only since that would eliminate on
street parking in front of some of the vacant lots.
Motion by Atherly, seconded by Parks to request that the City
Attorney prepare an ordinance designating alternate side parking
on Prairie View East from midnight to 9:00 p.m. (Motion declared
carried unanimously)
r
The undersigned owners of property on Prairie View East , in the interest
of safety and practicality, petition the City of Ames to amend the parking
regulations on our street . We feel the parking on our street is a problem and
ask the city council to adopt regulations for parking, on Prairie View East .
We suggest Mondays, Wednesdays , Fridays , and Sundays parking he allowed only
on the even numbered side of the street. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
parking allowed only on the odd numbered side of the street. This petition
also expresses our disapproval of the rumor of zone placements on the corners ,
as this would limit the amount of parking for the occupants of residences on c
the corner lots. The alternate parking would take care of this potential
problem. All vehicles in non-compliance could be towed.
We also would like to have a dead end sign placed at the entrance to the
street because of the number of out of town school busses, large trucks, and .
miscellaneous traffic seeking a short cut to the high school..
We are hoping you will take prompt action to resolve these matters.
Thank you.
