SUBJECT: Effective Date of Increases in Mayor & Council Compensation
You ask how many months until increases in Mayor & Council compensation
take effect. The answers are provided by Section 372.13(8) The Code
which states in relevant part:
". . . a change in the compensation of the Mayor shall not be-
come effective during the term in which the change is adopted
x x x
"A change in the compensation of council members shall become
effective for all council members at the beginning of the term
of the council members elected at the election next following
the change in compensation."
Terms for the Mayor and council begin at noon on the first day in Jan-
uary which is not a Sunday or legal holiday, following a regular city
election. There is a regular city election in November of this year,
1983. The increase in council members compensation will take effect on
January 2, 1984.
Since the mayor is serving a four year term and the increase for the
Mayor cannot become effective during the Mayor's term, the increase in
compensation for the Mayor will not take effect until January of 1986.
