HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form, January 4, 1983 COUNCIL ACTION FORM Date: January 4, 1983 SUBJECT: First reading of an ordinance establishing Elwood Drive as a through Street. BACKGROUND: A recent court case involving the City of Ames revealed that the Ames Code does not contain provisions for establishing stop sign controls at Oakwood Road and Elwood Drive. Further investigation reveals that stop signs along Elwood Drive are not established at any point in the Ames Code. This oversight evidently occurred as the Oakwood Road area was annexed into the City. At that time the stop sign was physically located at the two intersections, however, they were in the county. It is thus necessary to codify these intersections for inclusion in the current Ames Code. The easiest way to solve this omission is to declare Elwood Drive a through street except at Lincoln Way and South 4th Street where traffic control signals assign right-of-way. The proposed ordinance would establish the legal basis for stop sign controls at Elwood Drive's intersections with Oakwood Road, Airport Road, Mortensen Parkway, and South 16th Street. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Approve the proposed ordinance on its first reading. 2. Reject the proposed ordinance and direct that the above mentioned intersections be uniquely identified in the code as being a special stop intersection. RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is recommended that Council approve the ordinance on its first reading.
