AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY
OF AMES, IOWA BY REPEALING SECTION 29.40 "OFF-STREET
PARKING REQUIRED" AND ENACTING A NEW SECTION 29.40 FOR
TIE PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHING A SPECIFIC OFF-STREET PARK-
ING REQUIREMENT UNDER THE ZONING ORDINANCE FOR
ELDERLY AND HANDICAPPED HOUSING PROJECTS; REPEALING
ALL ORDINANCES OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES; AND ESTABLISH-
ING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ENACTED, by the City Council for the City of Ames, Iowa:
Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames shall be and the
same is hereby amended by repealing section 29.40 thereof and enacting a
new section 29.40 to read as follows:
"29.40. OFF-STREET PARKING REQUIRED.
In all districts there shall be provided at the time any build-
ing is erected or structurally altered (except as otherwise pro-
vided in this chapter), off-street parking spaces in accordance
with the following requirements:
(1) Dwellings: One and two-family dwellings, two parking
spaces for each dwelling unit; multiple-dwellings, 1.5 for
one bedroom units, two parking spaces for each dwelling
unit for all others.
(-2) Rooming, lodging or boarding house: One parking space
for each sleeping room.
(3) Fraternity or sorority: One parking space per each 300
square feet of floor space.
(4) Private club or lodge including golf clubs: One parking
space per each 200 square feet of floor area.
(5) Church or temple: One parking space for each eight (8)
spaces .in the main auditorium.
(6) School (except high school or colleges): One parking
space for each ten (10) seats in the auditorium or main
assembly room, or one space for each classroom, which-
ever is greater.
(7) Community center, library, museum or art gallery: Ten
(10) parking spaces plus one additional space for each
three hundred (300) spare feet of floor area in excess of
two thousand (2,000) square feet.

(8) Hospital: One parking space for each four (4) beds
plus one for each two (2) employees.
(9) Sanitarium, convalescent home, home for the aged or
similar institution: One parking space for each six (6)
beds.
(10) Theater or auditorium (except school) : One parking
space for each five (5) seats or bench seating spaces.
(11) Sports arena, stadium or gymnasium: One parking space
for each five seats or seating spaces.
(12) Tourist home, cabin, motel or hotel: One parking space
for each sleeping room.
(13) Dance hall, assembly or exhibition hall without fixed
seats: One parking space for each one hundred (100)
square feet of floor area used therefore.
(14) Business or professional office building including
studios, banks, medical or dental clinics: Three (3)
parking spaces plus one additional parking space for
each four hundred (400) square feet of floor area over
one thousand (1,000).
(15) Bowling alley: Five (5) parking spaces for each lane.
(16) Mortuary or funeral home: One parking space for each
fifty (50) square feet of floor space in slumber rooms,
parlors and individual funeral service rooms.
(17) Retail store or personal service establishment, except as
otherwise specified herein: One parking space for each
two hundred (200) square feet of floor area.
(18) Furniture or appliance store, wholesale establishments,
machinery or equipment sales and service, clothing or
shoe repair or service shop: Two (2) parking spaces
plus one additional parking space for each five hundred
(500) square feet of floor area over one thousand
(1,000).
(19) Printing shop, plumbing shop, manufacturing or indus-
trial establishment, research or testing laboratory,
creamery, bottling plant, warehouse, or similar establish-
ment: One parking space for each two (2) employees on
the maximum working shift plus space to accommodate all
trucks and other vehicles used in connection therewith.

(20) Car wash: Five (5) parking spaces for each washing
bay.
(21) Gasoline service stations: Three (3) parking spaces

plus two (2) spaces for each service stall.
(22) Enclosed tennis, handball, racquetball, squash courts:
Four (4) spaces per each court plus one (1) space per
each additional 200 square feet.
(23) Housing for the elderly or handicapped: Housing specif-
ically designed and designated for the elderly and/or
handicapped and government financed or subsidized shall
provide not less than .75 parking spaces for each
efficiency and one bedroom apartment and 1.0 parking
spaces for each two or more bedroom apartment. "
Section Two. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith
are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict, if any.
Section Three. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from
and after its passage and publication as required by law.
