AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY
OF AMES, IOWA BY REPEALING SECTIONS 22.7 THROUGH SEC-
TION 22. 12 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE AND ENACTING NEW SEC-
TIONS 22.7 THROUGH 22.10 FOR THE PURPOSE OF REVISING
THE STREET SNOW REMOVAL REGULATIONS; REPEALING ORDI-
NANCES OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH TO
THE EXTENT OF SUCH CONFLICT, IF ANY; PROVIDING A PENAL-
TY; AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ENACTED, by the City Council for the City of Ames, Iowa:
Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa shall be and is
hereby amended by repealing Sections 22.7 through and including Section
22.12.
Section Two. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames is hereby further
amended by enacting new Sections 22.7 through 22. 10, said new Sections to
read as follows:
"Sec. 22.7. PURPOSE
The purpose of Sections 22.7 through and including Section
22. 10 of the Municipal Code is to provide procedures for ordering
the location of the vehicles parked on City streets so as not to
impede the progress of snow removal equipment endeavoring to
clear the streets of snow and to provide for the tow-away of
vehicles so stopped, standing or parked as to constitute safety
hazards by impeding the passage of vehicles on the streets or the
removal of unsafe accumulations of snow and ice.
Sec. 22.8. SNOW ROUTES
Stopping, standing or parking of vehicles upon a street or
streets designated as snow routes, except as required at inter-
sections or otherwise to avoid collision, shall be and is hereby
prohibited at any time when snow-removal operations are in pro-
gress on said streets and before such operations have been com-
pleted for said streets by plowing the snow to the side of the
street. Vehicles found to be parked in violation of this ordinance
shall be cited for said violation and, to obviate the safety hazards
occasioned by incomplete snow removal, be summarily towed on
orders of a police officer to some place where the vehicle may be
lawfully parked or to the City impoundment lot. The costs of such
towing shall be assessed to and paid by the operator or registered
owner of the vehicle. The officer ordering the towing shall keep a
notation as to each vehicle towed, the place to which it is taken,
and by whom.
Sec. 22.9. SNOW ROUTES DESIGNATED
On the following streets or portions of streets designated in
this section, it shall be unlawful, when official signs have been
erected giving notice of such as a "Snow Route--Tow-Away Zone",
to operate a motor vehicle contrary to Section 22.8:
(1) Airport Road from the west line of Duff Avenue to the east
line of Elwood Drive.
(2) Alcott Avenue from its intersection with Todd Drive to the
south line of Lincoln Way.
(3) Ash Avenue from the south line of Knapp St . to the north
line of Mortensen Parkway.
(4) 'Baughman Drive from the intersection of Beedle Drive to the
intersection of Dotson Drive.
(5) Beach Avenue from the south line of Lincoln Way to the north
line of Mortensen Parkway.
(6) Beedle Drive from the south line of Lincoln Way to its inter-
section with Baughman Drive.
(7) Bloomington Road from the west line of Hoover Avenue to the
west corporate limits.
(8) Buchanan Drive from the west line of Hoover Avenue to its
intersection with Eisenhower Avenue.
(9) Cessna Avenue from the east line of Country Club Boulevard
to the west line of Beach Avenue.
(10) Clark Avenue from the north line of Sixth Street to the south
line of Ninth Street.
(11) Country Club Boulevard from the east line of Ash Avenue to
its intersection with Cessna Avenue.
(12) Dayton Avenue from the south line of Lincoln Way to the
north corporate limits.
(13) Dotson Drive from the south line of Lincoln Way to its inter-
section of Baughman Drive.
(14) Duff Avenue from the north line of Lincoln Way to its inter-
section with Grand Avenue.
(15) Eisenhower Avenue from its intersection with Buchanan Drive
to its intersection with Hayes Avenue.

(16) Elwood Drive from the south line of Lincoln Way to the south
corporate limits.
(17) Emerald Drive from the north line of Garden Road to the
south line of Jewell Drive.
(18) Ferndale Avenue from the north line of Twenty-Fourth Street
to the south line of Thirtieth Street.
(19) Garden Road from the east line of Duff Avenue to its inter-
section with Garnet Avenue.
(20) Garfield Avenue from its intersection with Ross Road to its
intersection with Phoenix Avenue.
(21) Garnet Avenue from its intersection with Garden Road to the
east line of Jewell Drive.
(22) Georgia Avenue from the north line of Ontario Road to its
intersection with Toronto Street.
(23) Grand Avenue from the north line of Lincoln Way to the north
corporate limits.
(24) Hayes Avenue from the north line of Twenty-Fourth Street to
its intersection with Eisenhower Avenue.
(25) Hickory Drive from the north line of Lincoln Way to its inter-
section with Woodland Street.
(26) Hoover Avenue from its intersection with Thirtieth Street to
the north line of Bloomington Road.
(27) Hyland Avenue from West Street to the south line of Ontario
Road.
(28) Jewell Drive from the east line of Duff Avenue to the south
line of Garnet Drive.
(29) Kellogg Avenue from the north line of Twentieth Street to its
intersection with Twenty-Eighth Street.
(30) Knapp Avenue from the west line of Ash Avenue to its inter-
section with Sheldon Avenue.
(31) Lincoln Swing from the east line of South Dakota Avenue to
its intersection with Beedle Drive.
(32) Lincoln Way from the east corporate limits to the west cor-
porate limits.

(33) Mortensen Parkway and Mortensen Road from the west line of
Elwood Drive to the east line of State Avenue.
(34) Ninth Street from the west line of Duff Avenue to the east
line of Northwestern Avenue.
(35) North Dakota Avenue from the north line of Lincoln Way to
the north corporate limits.
(36) Northwestern Avenue from its intersection with Main Street to
Thirtieth Street.
(37) Ontario Street from its intersection with Hyland Avenue to the
west corporate limits.
(38) Phoenix Avenue from the east line of North Dakota to its
intersection with Garfield Avenue.
(39) Ridgewood Avenue from Sixteenth Street to the south line of
Twentieth Street.
(40) Roosevelt Avenue from the north line of Tenth Street to the
south line of Sixteenth Street.
(41) Ross Road from the west line of Hyland Avenue to the west
line of Garfield Avenue.
(42) Sheldon Avenue from the intersection of Knapp Street to the
intersection of Hyland Avenue.
(43) Sixteenth Street from the west line of Duff Avenue to
Ridgewood Avenue.
(44) Sixth Street from the west line of Duff Avenue to the west
line of Brookside Park.
(45) South Dakota Avenue from the south line of Lincoln Way to
the south corporate limits.
(46) South Dayton Avenue from the south line of Lincoln Way to
the U.S. 30 Bypass.
(47) South Duff Avenue from the south line of Lincoln Way to the
south corporate limits.
(48) South Fifth Street from the west line of Duff Avenue to the
west line of Walnut Avenue.
(49) South Fourth Street from its intersection with South Third
Street to the east line of Elwood Drive.
(50) South Sixteenth Street from the west line of Duff Avenue to
the east line of Elwood Drive.
(51) South Third Street from the west line of Duff Avenue to its
intersection with South Fourth Street.
(52) Stange Road from the south line of Twenty-Fourth Street to
the north line of Thirteenth Street.
(53) State Avenue from the south line of Lincoln Way to the south
line of Mortensen Road.
(54) Storm Street from the west line of Ash Avenue to its inter-
section with Welch Avenue.
(55) Thackeray Drive from its intersection with Todd Drive to the
south line of Lincoln Way.
(56) Thirteenth Street from the east corporate limits to Hyland
Avenue.
(57) Thirtieth Street from the west line of Grand Avenue to its
intersection with Hoover Avenue.
(58) Todd Drive from its intersection with Thackeray Drive to its
intersection with Alcott Avenue.
(59) Toronto Street from the west line of North Dakota Avenue to
its intersection with Georgia Avenue.
(60) Twentieth Street from the west line of Duff Avenue to the
west line of Ridgewood Avenue.
(61) Twenty-Eighth Street from the east line of Grand to its inter-
section with Kellogg Avenue.
(62) Twenty-Fourth Street from the west line of Duff Avenue to
the west line of Stange Road.
(63) Walnut Avenue from the south line of South Third Street to
its intersection with South Fifth Street.
(64) Welch Avenue from the south line of Chamberlain Street to its
intersection with Storm Street.
(65) West Street from the west line of Sheldon to its intersection
with Woodland Avenue.
(66) Woodland Street from its intersection with West Street to its
intersection with Hickory Drive.
Sec. 22. 10. OTHER TOW-AWAY ZONES FOR SNOW REMOVAL
(1) Vehicles parked in violation of the provisions of Section
18.22(1) of this Code shall be towed when found so parked after
posting of snow removal, tow-away notice signs or boxes for a
period of at least eight hours, so that those high density com-
mercial areas can be cleared of snow to prevent aggravated traffic
congestion and impedence of emergency vehicle access in a location
where the consequences of such congestion or impedence could be
of especially severe impact on public safety and well-being.
(2) After especially heavy snow accumulations, the City
Manager may post other streets with snow removal, tow-away
notice signs, and cause the towing of vehicles parked contrary to
such notice posted for more than twelve hours when such is
deemed necessary to enable City crews to clear out snow from
areas that had numerous parked cars or which for some other
reason could not be effectively cleared of snow by ordinary snow
plowing operations, so as to obviate the occurrence or continuance
of a special hazard caused by the said condition."
Section Three. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance shall constitute
a simple misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed one hundred dollars
($100.00) or by imprisonment not to exceed thirty (30) days.
Section Four. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after
its passage and publication as required by law.
