Mr. John Elwell
City Manager
Ames, IA 50010
Dear Mr. Elwell :
A month or two ago , it was brought to my attention
that there were three illegal hook-ups for Cablevision.
They were : the apartment next to Friedrich on Duff, the
Junior High School and the "Ames Tribune. " Steve Soesbe,
owner of the 'Tradewinds Lounge" on Fifth promptly hooked
up to a light pole and received Cablevision in his place
of establishment. When Mr. Weber, City Engineer, learned
of this, Steve' s Cablevision was immediately disconnected.
I called Mr. Weber and told him that if Steve Soesbe was
disconnected, so should the apartments of Friedrichs. It
was at this time that I learned of the other two illegal
hookups. Terry Rich told me that on April 1st the apartment
would be disconnected. At our last meeting in April , I
learned that an appeal was made to you and not only was the
apartment allowed to continue , but also the Junior High
School and "Ames Tribune. "
We are dealing with the problem of allowing Cable-
vision in the downtown area. As I see it, Mr. Elwell , you
have one of two choices :
(1) Allow any merchant or resident in the downtown
area to be equally "illegally" hooked up to cable
as the three already there; or
(2) If this is not approved, then the Junior
High School, 'Ymes Tribune" and Friedrich's
apartments shall be immediately disconnected.
Sincerely,
Marie Shetterly
