HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Regulating Temporary Signs Pertaining to an Election ORDINANCE NO. 2785 AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES , IOWA BY REPEALING SUBSECTION 5 . 27 (2) THEREOF AND ENACTING A NEW SUBSECTION 5 . 27 (2) FOR THE PURPOSE OF REVISING THE REGULATIONS WITH RESPECT TO TEMPORARY SIGNS PERTAINING TO AN ELECTION; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT THEREWITH TO THE EXTENT OF SUCH CONFLICT IF ANY; PROVIDING A PENALTY AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council for the City of Ames , Iowa : Section One . The Municipal Code of the City of Ames , Iowa s�iabe and is hereby amended by repealing subsection 5 . 27 (2) thereof as said subsection has existed heretofore. Section Two. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowans —a11—be and is hereby further amended by enacting a new subsection 5 . 27 (2) , said new subsection to read as follows : " (2) Advertising Permitted. Advertisement or announcement contained on any temporary and/or portable sign shall pertain only to civic , political , religious , fraternal or other nonprofit activities . Temporary or portable signs for the purpose of commercial advertising are prohibited, except for announcement of special one time sales or one time events or occurrences not exceeding 15 days . No temporary or portable sign shall be displayed longer than 15 conse- cutive days , except that political cam- paign signs and signs pertaining to any election or ballot issue in an election may be displayed any length of time but shall be removed by the person in posses- sion and control of the property on which they are displayed, not later than five days following the election to which said signs shall pertain. " -2- Section Three. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict fierewi�Tare hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict if any. Section Four. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance s a consitute a simple misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed one hundred (100) dollars or by imprison- ment for a period not to exceed thirty (30) days . Section Five. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and —aTter its passage and publication as required by law.
