PREFACE
Effective July 1, 1975 the Code of Iowa has required that a city
shall, at least once every five years, compile a code of ordinances
containing all of the city ordinances in effect, except grade ordinances,
bond ordinances, zoning map ordinances and ordinances vacating streets
and alleys. (Acts 1972 [64 G.A. ] Ch. 1088, Sec. 78). This volume is
enacted and published in fulfillment of the statutory mandate, but also
to achieve the desirable goal of reviewing and revising ordinances to
reflect changes in law and attitude.
Because the code is not only a recompilation of ordinances but also
contains amendmended and revised ordinances, a public hearing on the
code as proposed was held, following published notice on June 3, 1980,
all as required by law. (Section 380.8 Code of Iowa, 1979).
The last complete revision and recodification of the ordinances of
the City of Ames was in 1967; and the last before that was in 1956.
This code will be supplemented on a regular basis with supple-
ments being provided to subscribers at cost.
In the Appendices are some rules and policies and other matter of
general interest relating to the services and departments of the City
government. These also will be supplemented and revised from time to
time.
Preparation of this code has occupied a period of over 18 months
and represents the product of creative energy by numerous persons in
all departments of the city. Special acknowledgement is due Donna
Scherr, legal secretary, without whose commitment and dedication the
project would not have been possible, and to Margaret Pearce, who,
among other things, accomplished the index.
