SKARDA Superintendent Administrative Offices Assistant Superintendent 120 South Kellogg Business and Finance Ames, Iowa 50010 Phone: (515) 232-3400 March 18, 1980 The Honorable Paul Goodland, Mayor of Ames, and Ames City Council Members City Hall Ames, Iowa 50010 Dear Mayor Goodland and City Council Members : Please record our support of your efforts to eliminate the open and advertised sale of drug-related paraphernalia in Ames stores. We share your concern relative to the damaging effects of drug abuse, and believe that the open sale of paraphernalia does contribute to an environment which makes no distinction between drug use and drug abuse. If one starts, as we do, from the premise that the use of the material for which the paraphernalia was designed is illegal , then there can be no legal need for such paraphernalia. On the basis of that logic, then, there is no legitimacy to differentiating by age the sale of paraphernalia. It is appropriate to tell our youth, and others not so young, that this society, in this community, does not condone illegal drug use. You are taking one visible step to send that message, and we applaud your efforts. Sincerely, Luther L. Kiser Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Ralph Farrar, Principal Ames Senior High School Don Carlson, Principal Ames Junior High School LK/b c, '7 1
