City Attorney January 30 , 1979 JIM Honorable Lee Fellinger, Mayor And Members of the City Council Of The City of Ames , Iowa In Re : An Ordinance Creating and Establishing Fire Zones Under the Provisions of the Uniform Building Code Adopted as the Lo al Building Code for the City of Ames Dear Mayor Fellinger and Council Members : A part of the 1976 Uniform Building Code which was recently made applicable to the City of Ames by an ordinance adopting the State Building Code sets out regulations pertaining to three "fire zones" . It is up to the local jurisdiction, however, to establish what parts of the city are to be in which of the fire zones . The effect of this designation is to, among other things , prohibit the use of certain types of building materials in one zone that might be allowed in another. This is not a new approach in the City of Ames, and was in fact done under the provisions of the 1964 Uniform Building Code. The allocation of areas to the respective fire zones has in the past been done by means of reference to zoning designa- tions . The inspection and planning department has recommended that this practice be continued, at least for now, using the present zoning designations until such time as new zoning regulations are enacted. Combining Education and Industry with Hospitality -2- I therefore request the City Council proceed immediately to the enactment of the attached ordinance. Also enclosed herewith are photocopies of the pages from the 1976 Uniform Building Code pertaining to fire zones. These pages may give the City Council some insight into what this ordinance pertains to. Respectfully submitted, John R. Klaus City Attorney cc T.
