Dear 11rs. Shank:
I was greatly distressed last ni?ht when I read in the Ames
Tribune that the city of Ames is contemplating annexing approxi-
mately 200 acres of land located out towards the Ames Golf and
Country Club. As I recall, the citizens of Ames voted against
such annexations several tirnes in recent years.
Also, in recent gears, the! Ares school board closed Harlan
School, Beardshear School, and 4ihittier School because of a '"des-
creasing enrollment", while real estate interests pushed for a
new school near 24th Jtreet. a. feel very confident that if the
200 acres are annexed and devel.oaed those new citizens of Ames
will soon demand that Ames build a new school--on the land in
north Ames held by the. school hoard. A`no pars for building a
new school? Who pays for the extension of sewer and water lines
to the new area? 'oho pays for the expansion o]: the city electric
plant, the city crater well system, the city •riater treatment plant,
and the city sewage treatment plant? As a current resident of
Ames. I strongly object to paying more taxes and hi,7her utility
rates so that the local real estate interests can make lots of
money while converting Ames into a sprawling suburban mess.
Please help keep the center of Ames an active and pleasant
place to live, work, and catch a bus, even if they local real es-
tate people have to settle for a 'Little less profit.
Sincerely yours,
John Imsande
