To: Honorable Lee Fellinger, Mayor
And Members of the City Council
Of The City of Ames, Iowa
In Re : Hotel-Motel Tax
Dear Mayor Fellinger and Council Members:
At the Council meeting of June 20 I was directed to prepare
an ordinance and advise the Council on the procedures for
initiating imposition of the hotel-motel tax authorized by
the enactment of S .F. 336 during the last session of the
Iowa General Assembly.
Herewith you will find a form of ordinance proposed for that
purpose . The ordinance establishes the maximum rate of tax
allowed and follows the language of the statute authorizing
the tax. This form of ordinance will not make any commit-
ments with respect to the manner in which the funds derived
from the tax will ultimately be budgeted and expended, other
than the rather general limitations set out in S.F. 336 . If
the City Council wishes to include more specific provisions
as to the use of the revenues derived from the tax, this
could be done within the context of the ordinance.
The Council will note that the tax cannot be imposed until
it has obtained voter approval in an election to be held at
the time of the City 's general election.
Respectfully submitted,
F
