Honorable Lee Fellinger, Mayor
And Members of the City Council
Of The City of Ames , Iowa
Dear Mayor Fellinger and Council Members :
At the last meeting of the City Council it was directed that
the Municipal Code be amended to increase the fees for im-
poundment of dogs to $15 . 00 for the first occurrence, $25 . 00
for the second occurrence, and $35 .00 for the third occurrence .
Herewith you will find a form of ordinance prepared for this
purpose. In addition to the matter of the impounded dogq,
the section being amended also includes fees for a number of
other services rendered at the animal shelter. The City
Manager instructed that I include in the ordinance prepared
increases with respect to certain of these services. Adop-
tion fees for dogs and cats have not been increased as part
of the City Manager ' s recommended policy of encouraging
adoption of these animals .
The increases proposed are specifically as follows : board of
dogs per day increased from $1. 50 to $2 . 00, board of cats per
day increased from $1 . 00 to $1 .50, putting a dog to sleep
increased from $5 . 00 to $6 . 00, putting a cat to sleep increased
from $2 .50 to $3. 00 , rabies vaccine given at shelter increased
from $5 . 00 to $6 . 00 , distemper vaccine given at shelter for
a dog increased from $7 . 50 to $8 . 00, distemper vaccine given
at shelter for a cat increased from $2 . 50 to $3. 00. This increase
in fees is imposed as an attempt to recover a portion of the
increased cost of labor and materials that have been experi-
enced since these fees were established in 1973 .
Respectfully submitted
