ORDINANCE NO . 2630
AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE
OF THE CITY OF AMES , IOWA FOR THE PURPOSE
OF REVISING ITS PROVISIONS FOR THE REGU-
LATION OF BICYCLES AND THEIR USE AND
REGULATIONS WITHIN THE CITY OF AMES BY
REPEALING SECTIONS 7-3004 , 7-3009 , 7-3011 ,
7-3013 , 7-4001 and 33-110o6 AND ENACTING
NEW SECTIONS 7-3004 , 7-3011 , 7-4001 and
33-110o6 ; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES OR
PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH
TO THE EXTENT OF SUCH CONFLICT IF ANY ;
PROVIDING A PEANLTY ; AND , ESTABLISHING
AN EFFECTIVE DATE .
BE IT ENACTED by the City Council for the City of Ames ,
Iowa :
Section One . The Municipal Code of the City of Ames ,
Iowa shall be and hereby is amended by repealing sections
7-3004 , 7-3009 , 7-3011 , 7-3013 , 7-4001 , and 33-110o6 as said
sections have existed heretofore .
Section Two . The Municipal Code of the City of Ames ,
Iowa shall be and is hereby further amended by enacting new
sections 7-3004 , 7-3011 , 7-4001 and 33-11006 , said new
sections to read as foll*ws :
"Sec . 7-�004 . Number of Passengers .
No bicycle shall be used to carry more
than *ne person unless equipped with a
seat for each person carried.
Sec . 7-3011 . Riding on Sidewalks .
It is unlawful for any person to operate
a bicycle upon any sidewalk on the follow-
ing streets : Main Street from Duff Avenue
to Clark Avenue ; Lincolnway on the south
side thereof from Stanton Avenue to Hayward
Avenue .
Sec . 7-4001 . Lamps , Reflectors Required.
Every bicycle when in use during the hours
from sunset to sunrise shall be equipped
with a lamp on the front which shall emit
a white light visible from a distance of
at least five hundred feet to the front
and with a red reflector or lamp on the
rear which shall be visible 300 to the
rear when directly in front of lawful
upper beams of headlamps on a motor vehicle .
Sec . 33-11006 . Duties when emerging from
alley , driveway or building.
It is unlawful for the driver or operator
of a vehicle , including a bicycle , when
emerging from an alley , driveway or build-
ing to fail to stop such vehicle immediately
prior to going onto a sidewalk or onto the
sidewalk area extending across any alley-
way, or onto a bikeway or bike path and
the right of way shall be yielded to any
pedistrian or bicyclist as may be necessary
to avoid collision and upon entering the
roadway the right of way shall be yielded
to all vehicles approaching so closely as
to constitute a hazard , but when said
right of way shall have been so yielded ,
the driver or operator may then proceed

cautiously and with due care enter said
roadway . "
Section Three . All ordinances or parts of ordinances in
conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such
conflict , if any.
Section Four. Violation of the revisions of this or-
dinance shall constitute a misdemeanor punishable by a fine
not to exceed $100 or imprisonment for a period not to exceed
30 days .
Section Five . This ordinance shall be in full force and
effect from and after its passage and publication as required
by law.
