ORDINANCE NO. 2515
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOW
BY REPEALING ARTICLES I AND III OF CHAPTER 12 RELATIVE TO ELECTIONS
AND ADOPTING NEW ARTICLES I AND III OF CHAPTER 12 FOR THE PURPOSE
OF REPEALING PROVISIONS WHICH HAVE BECOME OBSOLETE DUE TO CHANGES
IN THE LAWS OF THE STATE OF IOWA AND P.EPLACING SUCH PROVISIONS
WITH VALID ENACTMENTS PROPERLY REFLECTING THE PRESENT LAW OF THE
STATE OF IOWA; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN
CONFLICT THEREWITH AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL FOR THE CITY OF
AMES , I0WA:
Section 1 . That the Municipal Code of the City of Ames,
Iowa, be and the same is hereby amended by repealing Article I
of Chapter 12 thereof as said. article and chapter have heretofore
existed.
Section 2 . That the Municipal Code of the City of Ames ,
Iowa, be further amended by enacting a new Article I of Chapter
12 to read as follows :
Article I . In General
Sec. 12-1001 . City elections .
There shall be a regular city election on
the first Tuesday after the first Monday in
November of each odd numbered year. The city
shall hold general, special, or runoff elections
as required and provided for by the laws of
the state of Iowa.
Sec. 12-1002 . Terms of elected officers .
Terms of office of elected officers of the
city of Ames shall begin and end at noon on
the first day in January which is not a
Sunday or legal holiday following a regular
city election unless another date is
prescribed by law of the state of Iowa.
The term of office for council members
shall, subject to the foregoing, be four (4)
years as decided upon by the voters in a
special election held November 2 , 1954 .
The term of office for the mayor shall,
subject to the foregoing, be two (2) years .
The term of office for members of the
Ames Municipal Hospital Board of Trustees
shall , subject to the foregoing, be six (6)
years .
Section 3 . That the Municipal Code of the City of Ames,
Iowa, be further amended by repealing Article III of Chapter 12
as said article has heretofore existed.
Section 4 . That a new Article III of Chapter 12 be
adopted to read as follows:
Article III . Runoff Elections
Sec. 12-3001. Runoff elections adopted.
Runoff elections , as provided for by the
laws of the state of Iowa, shall be held
in lieu of primary elections .

Sec. 12-3002 . When and how held.
A runoff election shall be held for
positions unfilled because of failure of
a sufficient number of candidates to
receive a majority vote in the regular
city election. Candidates who do not
receive a majority of the votes cast
for the office for which they have
filed but who received the highest number
of votes cast for that office in the
regular city election to the extent of
twice the number of unfilled positions
are candidates in the runoff election.
Section 5 . All ordinances and parts of ordinances in
conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such
conflict.
Section 6 . This ordinance shall be in full force and
effect from and after the lst day of July, 1975.
