33-5005 ; ENACTING A NEW SECTION 33-5005 , ESTABLISHING THE LEGEND
I� FOR SIGNAL TRAFFIC CONTROL; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES AND PARTS OF
ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE
IT IS ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AMES ,
IOWA:

Section 1. Section 33-5005 of Chapter #33 of the Municipal!
Code of the City of Ames , Iowa, as hitherto existing is hereby
�i repealed.
Section 2. A new section to be numbered 33-5005 is hereby
added as follows :
Sec. 33-5005 . Traffic-control signal legend.

When traffic is controlled by traffic-control signals
exhibiting the words "Go" , "Caution" , or "Stop" or
exhibiting different colored lights successively one at a
time, or with arrows, the following colors only shall be j

ii used and said terms and lights indicate and apply to
!I drivers of vehicles and pedestrians as follows :
{ (a) Green alone or 'aGpn
(1) Vehicular traffic facing the signal shall
proceed straight through or turn right or left
unless a sign at such place prohibits either
such turn. But vehicular traffic, including i
vehicles turning right or left, shall yield
the right-of-way to other vehicles and to
i pedestrians lawfully within the intersection
or an adjacent crosswalk at the time such i
signal is exhibited.

i (2) Pedestrians facing the signal may proceed
i across the roadway within any marked or
unmarked crosswalk.
i
(b) Yellow alone or "Caution" when shown following the
green or "Go" signal.
1I (1) Vehicular traffic facing the signal shall sto
before entering the nearest crosswalk at the
intersection, _'out if such stop cannot be made
in safety, a vehicle may be driven cautiously '
through the intersection.
(2) Pedestrians facing such signal are thereby
advised that there is insufficient time to
cross the roadway, and any pedestrian then
I) starting to cross shall yield the right-of-wad

(c) Red alone or "Stop" .
(1) Vehicular traffic facing a steady red signal '
alone shall stop at a clearly marked stop linJ',
but if none , before entering the crosswalk on ,
the near side of the intersection, or if noneh
then before entering the intersection, and
shall remain standing until an indication to
proceed is shown. A right turn shall be
permitted at an intersection by vehicular
traffic which has come to a complete stop,
ii whenever a sign is in place permitting such
turn. Any right turn made pursuant to this i
subsection shall be made in such a manner that
it does not interfere with other vehicular
or pedestrian traffic lawfully using the
intersection. '
I (2) No pedestrian facing such signal shall enter
i the roadway unless he can do so safely and
' without interfering with any vehicular traffi�l
but a vehicle turning right at such inter-
section shall yield the right-of-way to a
pedestrian lawfully entering such intersection.

Section 3 . All ordinances and parts of ordinances in

conflict herewith are hereby repealed. i
Section 4 . This ordinance is in full force and effect fromf
and after its passage and publication as provided by law. II
