HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Amending Chapter 32 of Municipal Code; Relating to Traffic Control Signals 4 f ORDINANCE NO. 2340 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER #32 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA, REPEALING SECTIONS 33-5005 AND 33-11001; ENACTING NEW SECTIONS DESIGNATED 33-5005 AND 33-11001, ESTABLISH- ING RULES FOR INTERSECTIONS HAVING TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNALS AND ESTABLISHING A RIGHT-OF-WAY AT UNMARKED INTERSECTIONS; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES AND PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. IT IS ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA: Section 1. Sections 33-5005 and 33-11001 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames , Iowa, as hitherto existing are hereby repealed. Section 2. A new Section to be numbered 33-5005 is hereby added to the Municipal Code of the City of Ames , Iowa, as follows : Sec. 33-5005. Traffic-control signal legend. When traffic is controlled by traffic-control signals exhibiting the words "Go" , "Caution" , or "Stop" or exhibiting different colored lights successively one at a time, or with arrows , the following colors only shall be used and said terms and lights indicate and apply to drivers of vehicles and pedestrians as follows : (a) Green alone or "Go" . (1) Vehicular traffic facing the signal shall proceed straight through a turn right or left unless a sign at such place prohibits either such turn. But vehicular traffic, including vheicles turning right or left, shall yield the right-of-way to other vehicles and to pedestrians lawfully within the intersection or an adjacent crosswalk at the time such signal is exhibited. (2) Pedestrians facing the signal may proceed across the roadway within any marked or unmarked crosswalk. (b) Yellow alone or "Caution" when shown following the green or "Go" signal. (1) Vehicular traffic facing the signal shall stop before entering the nearest crosswalk at the intersection, but if such stop cannot be made in safety, a vehicle may be driven cautiously through the intersection. (2) Pedestrians facing such signal are thereby ad - vised that there is insufficient time to cross the roadway, and any pedestrian then starting to cross shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles . (c) Red alone or "Stop" . (1) Vehicular traffic facing the signal shall stop r !' { -2- before entering the nearest crosswalk at an inter- section or at such other point as may be indicated by a clearly visible line and shall remain stand- ing until green or "Go" is shown. (2) No pedestrian facing such signal shall enter the roadway unless he can do so safely and without interfering with any vehicular traffic. (d) Red with green arrow. (1) Vehicular traffic facing such signal may cau- tiously enter the intersection only to make the movement indicated by such arrow, but shall not interfere with other traffic or endanger pedes- trians lawfully within a crosswalk. (2) No pedestrian facing such signal shall enter the roadway unless he can do so safely and withou interfering with any vehicular traffic. Section 3. A new Section to be numbered 33-11001 is here- by added to the Municipal Code of the City of Ames , Iowa, as follows : Sec. 33-11001. Right-of-way at unmarked intersections. When two (2) vehicles enter an intersection from different highways or public streets at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right. Section 4. All ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed. Section 5. This ordinance is in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as provided by law. Passed this 16th day of June 1970 . Ldaise Whitcome, City Clerk Stuart N.
