AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 24 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF
THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA, BY REPEALING SECTIONS 24-1007, 24-1014
OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA; ESTABLISHING
NEW SECTIONS TO BE NUMBERED SECTIONS 24-1007, 24-1007. 1, and
24-1014, MAKING THE CARRYING OF CONCEALED WEAPONS, CARRYING
OR TRANSPORTING GUNS, AND DISCHARGING FIREARMS MISDEMEANORS ;
REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES AND PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT
HEREWITH AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
IT IS ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AMES,
IOWA:
Section 1. Sections 24-1007 and 24-1014 of the Municipal
Code of the City of Ames, Iowa, as hitherto existing are hereby
repealed.
Section 2. New sections to be numbered 24-1007, 24-1107. 1,
and 24--1014 are hereby added to the Municipal Code of the City
of Ames , Iowa, as follows :
Sec. 24-1007. Carrying Concealed Weapons .
No person, other than one holding a valid permit under
the laws of the State, shall carry or have concealed
upon his person, a dirk, dagger, sword, pistol, revolver,
stileto, metallic knuckles , pocket billey, sand bag,
skull cracker, slug, "Mace", or similar chemical, or
any other offensive or dangerous weapon capable of
being used for destructive purposes .
Sec. 24-1007. 1. Carrying or Transporting Guns .
No person, except a police officer (including a duly
appointed animal control officer) or one otherwise
permitted by law, shall have or carry any gun on his
person or in any vehicle or any public street, in any
public building, or in or on any public area or public
park, unless such gun be taken down, disassembled, or
contained in a case, and the barrel or barrels and
magazine thereof be unloaded. However, an assembled
gun may be transported in a vehicle if, unloaded and
either crated or locked in the trunk. Further provided,
that nothing herein shall apply to the Military Department
of Iowa State, to other Federal and State Military organ-
izations , or to the members of recognized organizations
preparing for military funeral ceremonies .
Sec. 24-1014. Discharging Firearms .
It is unlawful for any person, except one in proper
defense of himself or another, or in defense of his
property, or a peace officer in the performance of
his duties (including a duly designated animal control
officer) , or at a licensed shooting gallery, shall
fire off or discharge any cannon, gun, rifle, or other
firearm within the City. Provided, however, that
nothing herein shall apply to the Military Department
of Iowa State University, to other military organizations
of the United States and the State, to military funeral
ceremonies, or to firing conducted by recognized organ-
izations, such as the Isaac Walton League, at scheduled
periods, on an established range, and under the supervision !
of a designated individual who is qualified to assure
that adequate safety precautions are established and
observed.

Section 3 . All ordinances and parts of ordinances in
conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
Section 4. This ordinance is in full force and effect
from and after its passage and publication as provided by law.
