AN ORDnIZME REPEALING SECTIONS 5-2023, 5-2024, 5-2025, 5-2026,
5-2027, 5-2030, 5-2031, 5-2032, AND 5-2033 OF THE MUNICIPAL
CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA; ESTABLISHING NEW SECTIONS TO
BE NUMBERED SECTIONS 5-2030, 5-2031, 5-2032, AND 5-2033 MAKING
THE KEEPING OF AN UNVACCINATED DOG A MISDEMEANOR; PROVIDING
FOR THE IMPOUNDMENT OF UNTAGGED DOGS ; PRESCRIBING THE REQUIRE-
MENTS FOR RELEASE OF IMPOUNDED DOGS; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES
AND PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH AND ESTABLISHING
AN EFFECTIVE DATE,
IT IS ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AMES,
IOWA:
Section 1. Sections 5-2023, 5-2024, 5-2025, 5-2026,
5-2027, 5-2030, 5-2031, 5-2032, and 5-2033 of the Municipal
Code of the City of Ames, Iowa, as hitherto existing is hereby
repealed.
Section 2 . New sections to be numbered 5-2030, 5-2031,
5-2032, and 5-2033 are hereby added to the Municipal Code of
the City of Ames, Iowa, and are as follows :
Sec. 5-2030. Unvaccinated dogs. Any person who owns,
keeps, or harbors a dog without valid evidence of
current and prescribed vaccination is guilty of a
misdemeanor.
Sec. 5-2031. No city license required. The vaccination
tag required under Sec. 5-2029 being adequate to provide
registration of dogs, no city license is required.
Sec. 5-2032 . Untagged dogs to be impounded. Any dog
found without a valid rabies vaccination tag and for
which no valid rabies vaccination certificate can be
produced shall be apprehended and impounded.
Sec. 5-2033. Redemption of impounded dogs. When a dog
has been apprehended and impounded, the enforcement
agent shall give written notice in not less than two
(2) days to the owner if known. An owner may redeem
such a dog by having it immediately and duly vaccinated,
producing the required certificate of vaccination, and
by payingto the finarr_=e office a fee of two dollars ($2.00)
and paying the enforcement officer a daily fee of one
dollar ($1. 00) for each day or fraction thereof that the
dog has been impounded.
Section 3. All ordinances and parts of ordinances in
conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
Section 4. This ordinance is in full force and effect
from and after its passage and publication as provided by law.
