+ ORDINANCE NO. 2244
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 38 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE
CITY OF AMES , IOWA BY REPEALING SECTION 38-1044; CREATING A
NEW SECTION TO BE NUMBERED SECTION 38-1044 WHICH SECTIONS
DESIGNATES THE REQUIREMENTS FOR OFF-STREET PARKING; REPEALING
ALL ORDINANCES AND PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH; AND
ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
IT IS ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AMES,
IOWA:
Section 1 Section 38-1044 of the Municipal Code of the
City of Ames , Iowa, as hitherto existing is repealed,
Section 2 . A new section to be numbered 38-1044 is
added to the Municipal Code of the City of Ames : Iowa, and is
as follows :
Sec. 38-1044 Off-street parking required. In all
districts there shall be provided at the time any building
is erected or structurally altered (except as otherwise
provided in this chapter) , off-street parking spaces in
accordance with the following requirements :
(a) Dwellings : One and two-family dwellings ,
two parking spaces for each dwelling unit;
multiple dwellings , one and one-half (lz) parking
spaces for each dwelling unit-
(b) Rooming lodging or boardinghouse : One parking
space for each sleeping room
(c) Fraternity or sorority: One parking space
for each three hundred (300) square feet of floor
area in the building
(d) Private club or lodge including golf clubs :
One parking space for every five (5) memberships
(e) Church or temple: One parking space for each
eight (8) seats in the main auditorium.
(f) School (except high school or college) : One
parking space f_or each ten (10) seats in the
auditorium or main assembly room. or one space
for each classroom, whichever is greater
(g) College or high schools : One parking space
for each eight (8) seats in the main auditorium
or three (3) spaces for each classroom, whichever
is greater
(h) Community center, library, museum or art
gallery : Ten (10) parking spaces plus one
additional space for each three hundred (300)
square feet of floor area in excess of two
thousand (2 , 000) square feet
(i) Hospital: One parking space for each four
(4) beds plus one for each two (2) employees
(j ) Sanitarium, convalescent home, home for the
aged or similar- institution: One parking space
for each six (6) beds

(k) Theater or auditorium (except school) :
One parking space for each five (5) seats or bench
seating spaces
(1) Seasonal camp or cabin: One parking space
for each two (2) beds or for each cabin or sleeping
unit, whichever is greater ,
(m) Sports arena; stadium or gymnasium: One
parking space I-or each five (5) seats or seating
spaces
(n) Hotel : One parking space for each three
(3) sleeping -rooms or suite plus one space for
each two hundred (200) square feet of commercial
floor area contained therein,
(o) Tour is e home, cabin or motel: One parking
space for each sleeping room.
(p) Dance hall. assembly or exhibition hall
without fixed seats : One parking space for each
one hundred (100) square feet of floor area used
therefor
(q) Business or professional office building
including studios , banks , medical or dental
clinics : Three (3) parking spaces plus one
additional parking space for each four hundred
(400) square feet of floor area over one
thousand (1, 000�) ,
(r) Bowling alley : Five (5) parking spaces for
each lane .
(s) Mortuary or funeral home: One parking space
for each fifty (50) square feet of floor space
in slumber rooms , parlors and individual funeral
service rooms
(t) Retail store or personal service establishment,
except as otherwise specified herein: One parking
space for each two hundred (200) square feet of
floor area.
(u) Furniture or appliance store, hardward store,
wholesale establishments , machinery or equipment
sales and service, clothing or shoe repair or
service shop: Two (2) parking spaces plus one
additional parking space for each five hundred (500)
square feet of floor area over one thousand (1, 000)
(v) Printing or plumbing shop or similar service
establishment: One parking space for each three
(3) persons employed therein.
(w) Manufacturing or industrial establishment
research or testing laboratory , creamery, bottling
plant warehouse or similar establishment: One
parking space for each two (2) employees on the
maximum working shift plus space to accommodate
all trucks and other vehicles used in connection
therewith-

(x) Automatic car wash : Ten (10) parking
spaces for each washing bay.
(y) Gasoline service stations : Three (3)
parking spaces plus two (2) spaces for each
service stall.
Section 3 . All ordinances and parts of ordinances in
conflict herewith are repealed
Section 4 This ordinance is in full force from and
after its date of publication as required by law..
