HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Amending Chapter 12 of Municipal Code; Relating to Run-Off Elections cwb/9 -11 -67 ORDINANCE NO. 2210 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 12 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE, CITY OF AMES, IOWA, BY ADDING A NEW ARTICLE TO BE ENTITLED ARTICLE III, "RUN-OFF ELECTIONS ", CONSISTING OF FIVE NEW SECTIONS, PROVIDING FOR THE METHOD OF A RUN-OFF ELECTION IN LIEU OF A PRIMARY ELEC- TION, FOR THE CHOOSING OF PERSONS FOR ELECTIVE MUNICIPAL OFFICES ; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES AND PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH; AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. IT IS ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA: Section 1. A new article to be entitled Article III, "Run-Off Elections ", consisting of Sections 12 -3001 to and including Section 12 --3005 , is added to Chapter 12 of the Municipal Code, City of Ames , Iowa. Section 2. A new section, to be numbered 12--3001, is added to Chapter 12 of the Municipal Code, City of Ames , Iowa, and is as follows : Section 12-3001. Run- Off Election Adopted. "The pro- visions of Chapter 312, Laws of the 62nd General Assembly, providing for a run--off election are hereby adopted in lieu of Sections 363 . 16 through Section 363 . 21, 363 . 24 and 363 . 25, Code of Iowa, 1966. " Section 3 . A new section, to be numbered 12-3002, is added to Chapter 12 of the Municipal Code, City of Ames , Iowa, and is as follows : Section 12-3002 . Municipal Election. "Four weeks prior to the Municipal Election, the Clerk and Mayor shall can- vass the petitions of all candidates that have been filed with the Clerk, and shall find all candidates that have filed proper petitions to be the nominees for the offices sought. The Clerk shall then do all things necessary for conducting the Municipal Election. " Section 4. A new section, to be numbered 12--3003 , is added to Chapter 12 of the Municipal Code, City of Ames, Iowa, and is as follows : Section 12-3003 . Canvass of Votes . "On the day following the Municipal Election, the Clerk shall publicly canvass said election returns . He shall report said canvass results to the Council, listing the names of those candidates who have been elected for office and also listing the names of those candidates for office whose names must be placed on the run-off ballot, indicating the offices which are to be filled. " Section 5 . A new section, to be numbered 12-3004, is added to Chapter 12 of the Municipal Code, City of Ames , Iowa, and is as follows : Section 12-3004. Publication of Ballot. "If there must be a run--off election, the Clerk shall forthwith cause to be published once in a newspaper or newspapers publishe within the municipal corporation and of general circulatio therein, in proper form, the names of the persons as they are to appear on the municipal run--off ballot. " • .; ' -, cwb/9-11--67 N � r -2- Section 6. A new section, to be numbered 12-3005 , is added to Chapter 12 of the Municipal Code, City of Ames , Iowa, and is as follows : Sec. 12-3005 . Run--Off Election. "Any such run-off election shall be held two (2) weeks after the regular municipal election. The run--off election shall be conducted in the same manner as provided by law for conducting municipal elections except that there shall be no added voter registrations accepted for said election, but transfers may be accepted until ten (10) days before the election, as now provided by law. " Section 7. All ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are repealed. Section 8. This ordinance is in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as provided by law. Passed this 26th day of September 1967.
