AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER78 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF
THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA, BY REPEALING SECTIONS 78-2, 78-8, 78-9,
78-10, and .78-13 THEREOF: PROHIBITING DOGS AT LARGE: PROVIDING
FOR RABIES VACCINATION OF DOGS AND CATS: AND PROVIDING FOR
IMPOUNDMENT OF DOGS AND CATS.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AMW, IOWA
AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That Sections 78-2, 78-8, 78-9, 78-10, and 78-13 of
the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa, be and the same are hereby
repealed; and the following be and the same are hereby enacted in lieu
thereof to be known as Sections 78-2, 78- 8, 78-9, 78-10, and 78-13, respect-
ively of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa:
78-2. Dogs at Large or Unlicensed. It shall be unlawful
for the owner of any dog to permit or suffer such dog to
be at large, or to own, possess or harbor a dog in the
City of Ames without having obtained a license therefor
{ in compliance with the provisions of this Chapter as
i hereinafter set forth, except that a license shall not be
required for dogs under the age of three (3) months
which are confined to the owner's premises.
78-8. Impounding. Any dog found at large or without proper
license from the City of Ames, or any dog or cat found with-
out a current rabies tag attached to its collar or harness,
shall be subject to seizure and impoundment. If the owner-
ship of such dog or cat is known, it need not be impounded,
but the owner may be charged with violation of this ordinance.
78-9. Repossession. The possession of any dog or cat so
seized or impounded may be obtained by the owner upon pay-
ment to the City Clerk of the sum of two dollars ($2. 00), and
payment at the place of impoundment of a daily fee of one
dollar ($1. 00) for keeping such animal for each day or fraction
thereof during which said animal has been impounded, and upon
proper identification of said animal. The possession of any
unlicensed dog may only be obtained by the owner only after
obtaining a license and paying the fees provided herein. The
possession of any dog or cat not wearing a current rabies tag
may be obtained by the owner only after submitting proof of
current rabies vaccination and paying the fees provided herein.
78-10. Disposal. Any dog or cat so impounded and not
reclaimed by the owner within three (3) days, ex:lusive of
Saturdays and Sunda-,-vs and legal holidays, may be disposed
of as prescribed by the City Sanitarian.
78-13. Rabies Vaccinations. All dogs or cats three (3)
months or more of age shall be annually vaccinated for
rabies by a licensed veterinarian. It shall be unlawful
to own, possess or harbor a dog or cat in the City of Ames
not so vaccinated. A current rabies vaccination tag attached
to the animal's collar or harness shall be accepted as
evidence of such vaccination.

Section 2. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with
the provisions of this ordinance are hereby repealed.
Section 3. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from
and after its passage and publication as provided by law.
