HomeMy WebLinkAboutA003 - letter to Mayor and Council regarding vacation of Story Street, west of Colorado Avenue CITY OF AMES
MUNICIPAL BUILDING
AMES, IOWA
JOHN M. CARPENTER
CITY MANAGER April 5, 1962
To the Honorable Mayor and Council
Ames, Iowa
Subject Vacation of Story Street, west of Colorado Avenue,
Gentlemen° ,
The Engineering Department has turned over to me the following
information, concerned with the utilities in Story Street west of Colorado
Avenue where the St. Andrews Lutheran Church has asked that the City
vacate the street right-of-way to allow the expansion of the Church
building across the right-of-way in a north - south direction tying in to
on.e single piece their entire ownership on the west side of Colorado Ave-
nue.
The water main within the right-of.-way west of Colorado Avenue
is a 4" cast iron main constructed in April of 1954. It was constructed
approximately 256' west of the main line in Colorado Avenue. The City
has not collected any water connection fees from properties abutting
Story Street which is proposed to be vacated, We do not have records
showing the exact cost of this particular stretch of main. If we use otzr
average 1957 labor and equipment cost for laying 4" cast iron mains,
this amounts to $2. 41 per foot. Our current Central Service cost of 4"
cast iron pipe is $1. 37 per foot, and using these figures the cost of the
main would then be approximately $967. 68.
The sanitary sewer in this right-of-way was constructed by the
Lutheran Church when they built the sanitary sewer from the intersec-
tion of Story Street and Wilmoth Avenue and carried it on west to serve
their properties.
I pass this information on to you in case you wanted to consider
the possibility of establishing a. charge for the cast iron main which
would be lost due to the vacation of the street right-of-way. It is not
felt desirable that the city should retain responsibility for this 4"cast

iron line west of the main in Colorado Avenue upon the vacation of the street.
