Subject: Recommendations of the Committee on Dutch Elm Disease on the
Proposed Infected Elm Tree Ordinance
Gentlemen;
The City Council, at its meeting held on August 22, 1961, referred to the citizenfs
Committee on Dutch Elm Disease the proposed Dutch Elm Disease tree ordinance and asked
that the Committee study it and submit their comments and recommendations to the Council
at the meeting to be held on September 5, 1961. On August 29, 1961, the Committee held
a meeting with the following members present: Harold McNabb, George Cumming, and John
Carpenter.
The members of this Committee have given careful study to the various factors that
should be considered in an ordinance of this nature. As a result, the Dutch Elm Disease
Committee wishes to recommend the passage of the proposed ordinance making changes in
Chapter 77 of the Municipal Code of Ames, Iowa, by adding Section 77-1.10 and by amend—
ing Sections 77-2, 77-3 and 77-4.
The Committee also recommends that the time allowed for the removal of any Elm
tree located on private property which is infected with Dutch Elm Disease be for a
period of 15 days from the time such notice is served on the person owning or main—
taining the nuisance.
We request that the City Council give serious consideration to the recommendations
as presented by this Committee. If we may be of further service to you, please do not
hesitate to contact us.
