Signature Requirements—cities without runoff provisions(all but Ames)
The minimum number of signatures needed is dependent on the size of the city.
• For cities with a population of 3,500 or greater (Nevada): at least twenty-five (25) signatures
• For cities with a population between 100 and 3,499 (all except Nevada): at least ten (10) signatures
For Offices Elected by Ward(Nevada Ward 2 and Nevada Ward 4)
In cities where council members are only voted on by the residents of the ward, petition signers must live within
the ward.
Signature Requirements—cities with runoff provisions(Ames only)
The minimum number of signatures needed is at least ten (10) or two percent of the number of people who
voted for the office in the last regular city election,whichever is greater.
• Ames Mayor: at least eighty-four(84)signatures
• Ames Ward 1: at least twenty-nine (29)signatures
• Ames Ward 3: at least thirteen (13)signatures
• Ames At-Large: at least ninety-five (95) signatures
• Hospital Trustee: at least sixty-seven (67) signatures
For Offices Elected by Ward(Ames Ward 1 and Ames Ward 3)
In cities where council members are only voted on by the residents of the ward, petition signers must live within

Filing period
Monday, August 28—Thursday, September 21, 2017
• Nomination petitions and affidavits of candidacy are filed with the city clerk.
• City clerks' offices must be open until 5:00 pm on the day of the deadline.
• Affidavits must be notarized.
