HomeMy WebLinkAboutA007 - Letters in support of Acquatic Center 5-F-07 Ames Community School Board of Directors Resolutions in support of the Ames Aquatics Complex, passed May 7, 2007 Resolution 1. The board of directors of the Ames Community School District understands that healthy, active children are ready to learn. In addition, a vibrant Ames Community supports our students, families and employees, and makes Ames attractive to families considering a move to the Ames area. We believe that a new aquatics center will be an important asset for our community. We therefore enthusiastically support the new Ames Aquatics Center. Resolution 2: Whereas the proposed 13th Street site for the Ames Aquatics Center 1)benefits the Ames Community Schools because it would allow cooperative use of the new parking areas and provides a significant cost savings to the district in the areas of grading and water management for the proposed district athletic fields at that site, 2) benefits the Ames community because of its central location and because it improves an existing connected parcel of public land, and 3)benefits the ISU community because of its proximity to University housing and any future athletic fields would be used by both University and ACSD students, we recommend the Ames City Council selects the 13t Street site for the proposed Aquatics center tno 5 7 L May 7, 2007 MAY - 8 2007 Mayor and City Council CITY CLERK City of Ames CITY OF AMES,IOWA 515 Clark Ave Ames, Ia 50010 Dear Mayor and Councilmembers, On behalf of the League of Women Voters of Ames, I would like to indicate the League's support for moving ahead with a bond issue for an aquatic center in Ames. The LWV studies issues, reaches consensus of members and then adopts a position. The LWV of Ames has a position on leisure and recreation addressing this issue. This position states "support for additional facilities for both structured and non-structured public recreational activities for youth." Because water recreation is a popular activity and Ames' facilities are inadequate and outdated, we urge you to move ahead with this important community issue in a timely manner. Building of these facilities is long overdue and definitely needed in our community. Ames, in order to meet the outdoor aquatic needs in the past, has invested in used pools at about the time they had passed their prime. Carr's pool was in need of major upgrading at the times of the city's purchase. The old Ames Country Club Pool had major leaks and faulty equipment at the time of it's purchase. We nursed both pools as long as possible, until finally the country club pool had to be closed. I believe the Parks and Recreation Commission and staff have done an excellent job of collecting input over the past years from all corners of the community and I endorse the recommendation the Parks and Recreation Commission has passed on to you for your consideration. Their recommendation represents the majority opinion of the persons that attended the "pool parties" that have been held recently in our community. I hope you will wholeheartedly support the recommendation that centrally locates an outstanding proposal and would upgrade the quality of life in our community. I would be happy to help sell the up coming bond issue to our local citizens. Thank you for your time!
