Subject Aquatic Center
Ms. Griffen -
Council member Goodman asked that I respond to your question related to the Aquatic Center being
damaged when Squaw Creek floods.
The City of Ames increased its regulations related to building in the floodplain following the flood of 1993.
Regulations dictate that any building located in the floodplain be elevated a minimum of T above the 100
year flood level to assure flooding doesn't occur. Examples of this type of construction in our community
include the Target Store and the new Super Wal Mart, currently under construction, on South Duff.
I hope you find this information helpful....if you have questions please contact me at anytime.
Best Regards,

CITY OF AMES = "EXCELLENCE THROUGH PEOPLE"
Hello Mr. Goodman -
I am a long time Ames resident and my main concern, that I have not seen addressed, is how
flooding of Squaw Creek will affect (damage) the aquatic center? We all know it will flood
eventually. In fact, it just did a few weeks ago. This is an expensive venture for the taxpayers
and while I'm in favor of it, I don't think people will be too happy if it gets damaged during the
flooding that will eventually happen and we have to pay additional costs for repairs.
Sincerely,
Linda Griffen
