Mosiman Sent: Monday, July 24, 2006 10:51 AM To: Doug Merek (dmarek@city.ames.ua.us) Subject: election to fill vacancy Hello Doug: I understand that there will be a recommendation to hold the City Council vacancy election with the November 7`h General election. I will not be able to attend Council's meeting tomorrow night, so thought it best to e-mail. Though I am on record as of June 271h stating that the City vacancy election cannot be held in combination with the General election, I have recently determined that to do so will not cause undue difficulties, as long as the candidate information is submitted to my office as of August 30'h by 5:00 p.m. There is no conflict with the precinct boundaries, and all of the registered voters within Ward 2 will be entitled to the same ballot for both the City office and the offices of the General ballot. Therefore, I will look forward to working with the City in this combined election. Based on earlier discussions, I would like to communicate to you and to Ames Council regarding the certification of the election results; or the canvass of the elections. The City of Ames canvass is required to be held at 1:00 p.m. on the Thursday following Tuesday's election. The General election canvass is required to be held either Monday or Tuesday following the election. My intent is to have Story County's election software prepare two separate canvasses. If this effort proves unsuccessful in "test mode", I plan on completing a manual canvass for the City on Thursday, November 91h. This would allow a manual closing of the City election; and if necessary, allow a run-off election to proceed within the defined timeline. The General election canvass would then be completed Tuesday, November 14`h without the . 4 , City office being displayed. If there are any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this process, please let me know. I want to say MANY THANKS for all your efforts in outlining the various options available, and I look forward to hearing the City's decision.
