Dear Diane:
I am enclosing a copy of the City Election Planning Worksheets for the upcoming November 8 City
Election. Please complete the worksheets and return them to the Auditor's Office by Monday, June 27.
The Nomination Worksheet has a list of offices and number of signatures needed for each office to be
filled at the City Election on November 8, 2005. Please examine the list carefully and notify me
immediately if you find any errors.
An election calendar for this year is enclosed. Vacancies in city offices occurring on or before Saturday,
September 17, 2005 must be filled at the regular City Election. Please notify us immediately if a mayor
or council member resigns on or before this date. All candidates' nomination papers and affidavits
including papers for the unexpired term are to be submitted to you on Thursday, September 22 by 5:00
p.m. and to the Auditor on Friday, September 23, by 5:00 p.m. If you have a resignation close to the
September 17 deadline, you must act quickly to be able to have a candidate on the ballot.
Also enclosed is the City Clerk's Guide to City Elections, a Candidates Guide and copies of the
nomination papers. Please dispose of all old forms. Feel free to make copies to distribute to the
candidates. All information provided is available on our web site at tN ww.storvcounty.com under the
Auditor and Elections link. Campaign Finance and Disclosure brochures are available from the Iowa
Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board at the www.state.ia.uslethics web site.
The candidate filing period for the City Election is August 29—September 22. As the candidates pick
up their papers, please tell them to type or print the information at the top of the Affidavit of Candidacy
for City Elections and the State of Iowa Nomination Petition for City Offices. Their name needs to be
exactly the way the candidate wants it to appear on the ballot. Copies of the completed State of Iowa
Nomination Petition form can be made for additional signatures. When a candidate returns papers to
your office,be sure each form is filled out correctly and completely.

This year the Auditor's Office is offering a new service. When candidates return their papers, please
give them a Candidate Profile and cover letter. We have enclosed 5 copies, but feel free to make
additional copies of each as necessary. Iowa Code 376.4 requires City Clerks or their designee to have
offices open for candidates to file nomination papers until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 22. All
nomination papers and frill text for all public measures must be delivered to the Auditor's Office by 5:00
p.m. on Friday, September 23.
As a reminder, the close of voter registration for the City Election is Friday, October 28 at 5:00 pan. If
you receive any voter registrations at your office, please fax them to our office (515) 382-7221 as soon
as possible and put the original copy in the mail that same day.
Thank you for your help. Your assistance is essential in planning for a successful City Election. Please
feel free to call if you have any questions.
Regards,
