HomeMy WebLinkAboutA007 - Council Action Form dated September 25, 2001 ITEM # DATE: September 25, 2001 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: Approval of Funds for an Information Campaign about the bond issue for Hallett's Quarry. BACKGROUND: The City has set November 6, 2001 as the date for a bond issue in the amount of $4,970,000 to purchase and improve Hallett's Quarry. In order to provide the public with information about the project and the bond issue, $3,500 is requested to pay for advertising and printed materials. These materials will supplement the efforts of the "friends of Hallett's" group and are intended to provide citizens with factual information only. In addition to the printed brochure and the advertising, the public relations office will use the City's web site, City Side, and TV12 to continue to educate citizens about Hallett's Quarry and the upcoming bond issue, at no additional cost. The City Council has supported these information campaigns in the past. In 1991 , $5400 was approved by the City Council for public education materials for a bond issue for a family aquatics center/soccer complex. Earlier this year, Council also approved $6500 for the Fire Station 3 bond issue education. ALTERNATIVES: 1 . Approve the request for $3,500 2. Reduce the amount of the request. 3. Deny the request. CITY MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is the City Manager's recommendation that the City Council approve the Information Campaign and the $3,500 from the Contingency Account to fund it. COUNCIL ACTION: Hallett's Quarry Information Campaign In order to educate the public about the upcoming bond issue vote on Hallett' Quarry, funding is requested for a communication campaign. The campaign will attempt to educated the public about the long range benefits of purchasing the quarry, as well as to inform them of the upcoming special election. Campaign Components 1) A full-color brochure - 5,000 copies $1200 This would be distributed through speaking engagements, not mailed Full color printing process will be used to more clearly display the map and diagram of Hallett' Quarry 2) An advertising campaign two weeks before the vote $2100 3) Press release(s) 4) City Side article about the election - October/November issue 5) TV 12 - programs and calendar items 6) Web information and link to more extensive web sites 7) On-site public viewing of the site/hosted by members of the Ames City Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission Sunday, October 21, 2-4 pm and Saturday, October 27 from 10-noon $200 8) Local guest appearances on radio as can be arranged Cost to implement: $3500
